Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 105th minute, giving Spain its second World Cup title.
Spain Claims Its Second World Cup Title
The Final lived up to the moment. Ninety minutes of regulation came and went scoreless, with Argentina’s defense holding firm and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez turning away everything Spain threw at him.
Spain dominated the underlying numbers all match, twenty shots to Argentina’s two, but couldn’t find the breakthrough until extra time. Just 39 seconds into the second half of extra time, Ferran Torres finally beat Martínez, sealing a 1-0 win and Spain’s second World Cup title.
It also marked what’s expected to be Lionel Messi’s final World Cup appearance, closing out one of the sport’s great careers on the sport’s biggest stage. Fitting that a tournament this dramatic ended with a goal that came out of nowhere in extra time, after both teams had already given everything they had.
Spain’s road here wasn’t always easy either. They started their campaign with a draw against tournament debutants Cape Verde, hardly the mark of a team destined to lift the trophy. But this squad kept building through the knockout rounds, and by the Final, they looked every bit like champions.

The Final was the culmination of all of it, a packed house from the moment doors opened at 11 AM straight through the final whistle in extra time.
